My Sweet Petunia Goes to Court

So My Sweet Petunia, makers of the useful but extremely overpriced MISTI,  are suing Tim Holtz, WRMK and Hampton Art over their stamping platforms. MSP has succeeded in forcing WMRK and Hampton Art's platforms off the market but Tim's is still out there, and I will be buying it, as I will not want to support a greedy business that can't handle competition. How about you? What do you think?

  1. From what I've seen, Tim's sturdy stamping platform is the best one. He's backed by the biggest names in the industry, so it's unlikely that anyone will be dumb enough to sue him.

I hope that Bible-thumping MISTI witch loses her shirt on legal fees.

    1. She did sue Tim. He tweaked the platform and as far as I know beat the suit. WRMK and Hampton Art were not so lucky, her lawsuit forced them to pull their platforms off the market, which sucks. Competition is good!

    2. Good for Tim! Aside from a few not-so-hot products at Ranger over the years, his stuff is reliable. People like that MISTI witch are ruining the hobby.

Prima is a mess since they let Frank Garcia run all of the genuinely creative designers out of the company. Nothing but junked up planners and Frank's gaudy faux French signature crap is over there now and all of it's ridiculously expensive.
"Live With Prima" on YouTube used to be good, but it's been done by bad to mediocre no-name crafters for a long time. No big name designers any more. I haven't watched it for ages.

    3. Prima let greedy Frank Garcia sideline all of the hot designers like Jodie Lee Patterson, Julie Nutting and Jamie Dougherty. He acted like they were his dearest friends, then he stabbed them in the back and hogged the spotlight. He makes rare appearances on LWP and acts like he doesn't want to be there.

In addition to Frank's gooey faux French signature collections monopolizing the paper line and the international workshops he does for Prima, he also has his own design studio and website. Several of Prima's former senior staff went to work for him. He does videos for scrapbook.com and private crafting cruises as well. He no longer has to split cruise fees with other Prima designers since he effectively kicked all of them to the curb.

If you ask Prima what's going on with their bad changes, they either lie or won't say.

    1. I agree! I also don't like what I've heard about their customer service. Apparently they get rude when someone has an issue.

  3. Didn't they already sell some of the WRMK ones on HSN?

    1. Sort of. It's not the stamping platform, it's a revamped Letterpress that happens to stamp too, but that's not what they focus on anymore.

    2. All the MIsti threat of law suit did was delay the sales of Tonic's and WMRK's platforms. That's probably all she wanted to do --to get all the sales she could while they tweaked their products a bit. WMRK is on the market again. I have both, and they're both very good. I've never had a Misty. I don't trust the reviews over on Splitcoast Stampers when posters review sponsors. Everyone over there was going crazy about the Misti so I knew not to buy it. They did the same thing with Brushos, the same but more expensive than Ken Oliver's Color Bursts, which are great.

  4. Why does Ashley Horton wear her hair that way? Oh honey no it is not flattering.

  5. I don't think that's her hair --from the picture on her Web site.

  6. I don't think Ashley Horton wears a wig. If she did I would hope she would pick a more flattering style.

  7. Loads of cardmakers on YouTube are getting hundreds of really great dies for next to nothing from Aliexpress and similar online vendors in China. They continually make huge hauls. Some dies even cut heavier materials than cardstock and they're nearly identical to the name brand designs. Insignificant changes were made to avoid copyright infringement. Count me in!

Coming directly from China, delivery can be slow, but the die quality and prices are worth the wait. Damned if I'm going to pay Lawn Fawn and other ripoff manufacturers $35 to $50 per set for dies to make just one card! Their dies are probably made by the same Chinese factories for pennies.

With their greed, they killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Only diehard brand fans and crafters needing designs unavailable elsewhere will continue to pay outrageous US prices for what are nothing more than scraps of cheap stamped metal. There's even a Chinese factory that makes Sizzix-style Hello Kitty steel rule die cartridges that fit the Big Shot.

The same companies are starting to make great-looking clear stamp sets and I'll gladly try some of those too.

    1. When all of these so called “greedy” designers go out of business and Ali Epress doesn’t have anyone to rip off then you will be singing another tune. It is people like you that have caused all of the local craft supply shops to go out of business.

    2. Well wait till you receive a flimsy die that doesn't match the size pictured and is probably loaded with lead! They're not all created equal. But good luck if you find a consistently great manufacturer for cheap.

  8. Are dies sold here made in China? I've bought dies from Ali Express, among other things like jewelry, and like what I received. The dies I bought are the same quality I get from companies here, and some of the designs are identical. I agree the prices for dies here are ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Many stamp and die manufacturers on Ali Express outright steal designs from small businesses in the craft industry. Look on there and you will see direct copies of stamp sets from Lawn Fawn, MFT, Waffle Flower, etc. It is pretty outrageous. These companies dies are made here in the US hence the higher prices. The reason that you may see the exact same designs and "great-looking stamps" there is because they are stealing the designs.

  15. In the video he posted after he had been terminated he said he had done nothing wrong. But now, I presume after FSJ insisted he should come clean, he said “I misused company funds for my own benefit. And it involved significant amounts of money”. He should have been honest from the start and taken responsibility for his actions. I don't understand the people who are saying they forgive him, surely it's not up to them as it wasn't their money that was "misused". I wonder how much money was involved and what it was spent on.

    3. Heidi Sonboul moved to some redneck burg in Missouri and quit the scrapbooking business. She's just a fat, boring Mormon housewife now. Probably homeschooling her kids.

  21. Gossamer Blue is going out of business. Is this the start of once popular kit clubs hitting the skids?

I wonder what CHA 2018 will be like. No surprise, its 2017 debut in dead-ass Arizona was a predictable flop. Pricier than much better Anaheim, a lot of people didn't make the trip.

Some of the normally expensive online stores that always sell at MSRP have been running sales nearly all year and they still can't get rid of their inventory. Say what you will, but this industry is not doing well. I have enough unused stuff and didn't buy anything this year.

  23. I haven't seen any online excitement about CHA 2018. Not even a list of exhibitors. Last year's inaugural Phoenix show wasn't that well attended because of high travel expenses on top of exhibitor's fees.

Booking a convention at the height of Arizona's winter vacation rates is ridiculous, especially since there's nothing to do in Phoenix. It's never been anything but racist retirement colony. The Anaheim CHA shows weren't cheap, but attendees got their money's worth with all of the first-rate entertainment in nearby Los Angeles, Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. Southern California also has beautiful beaches and great food. Everything from the best fast food joints to palace-class dining in Beverly Hills.

I've tried to rekindle an interest in papercrafting, but can't do it. All of our LSS's and regional MeetUps are long gone and there are no big box crafts stores here. All of the crafting websites I liked have vanished as well. I visited Shimelle's YouTube channel recently and it's still nothing but clumsy kiddie crap made with her ugly AC papers. Too bad I can't get decent prices for the expensive scrapping stuff I bought and barely used. I'd sell everything but my Vagabond, Big Shot and a few rare designer items.

  24. I agree about AC and the mormon mafia that controls it. Same can be said about Scrapbook and Cards Magazine. Same brood from Creating Keepsakes with the same tired layouts of their precious little snowflakes. As far as CHA 2018, I notice on the Createvation website that almost all the booth space is taken unlike the past three years which is great. I do think Mixed Media and Planning memory keeping is starting to give the industry a little boost. I did find a couple of lines I am crazy about. Both new lines Paprika and Paper Crane I love and will probably purchase. My favorite new one is the "Blahs" from PinkFresh. It talks to me because the line address that everyone has shitty days and we should scrapbook them . It's not lollypops and unicorn farts like AC wants us to believe! Really different line. Check it out.
https://www.pinkfreshstudio.com/blogs/pinkfresh-studio/reveal-day-3-a-case-of-the-blahs. I am trying to do more mixed media scrapbooking. Love the Creative Scrapbooker magazine and Art Journaling. Very creative magazines that will probably inspire you.

  25. Curious to know what the real deal is with Nichole Heady leaving Papertrey Ink? Their IT guy, Rick, seems to have left at the same time.

  26. She posted that she has a new job in Maine working for a magazine conglomerate. No idea why she left. The team posted a goodbye video and even though they had known for some time seemed really sad about it. I haven’t bought from them for over a year. I never experienced bad service as some have complained about I just lost interest in their designs. I am guessing that sales are down since they don’t sell out like they used to. I guess Jane and Julie will take it from here as they don’t seem to be looking for a new creative director. Didn’t know that Rick left.

  30. What a sad National Scrapbooking Day for 2018. I remember the days when there were loads of fun online activities on that day. Now there are nothing but unexciting sales in the relatively few remaining online stores.

All of the LSS's where I live closed long ago and there are no big boxes here. I couldn't give away my untouched, unwanted scrapping stuff because no one can even relate to it. This hobby really is in bad shape.

  32. I agree! I thought the Misti was overpriced and wasn’t even convinced that I needed one. As the years have moved on, I researched the few platforms that were on the market and decided TH was the best-value. I have since purchased one and love it! Usually, competition is a positive , so sorry to hear of this lawsuit

    1. Lol, that's harsh. I laugh because maybe I am the last person who wants to overhaul my previous scrapbook albums. One really good one, I still think they are pretty but just don't need so many. I think the excessive nature of photo-taking was overwhelming to scrapbook anymore. Digital mountains of headshots! Anyways everything has its day.
