Welcome ScrapSmackers. This is a troll-free place to discuss and gossip about the scrap and papercraft world. The only rules are no personal threats/attacks, no hate speech and no trolling. Enjoy!
It would be nice if people who come here also posted links to their favorite forums, stores and YouTube channels. That would help with staying current and give others a good selection to choose from.
I'm stocking up on YT people to subscribe to. Here is who I have so far: - Inkie Quill - Mercy Tiara - Irit Landgraf - Jen Schow - Missy Whidden - Wilna Furstenberg - Raquel Bowman
I think there are a couple of things if I remember correctly about Authentique. 1. One of the owners (husband and wife) the husband used to be married to the owner of MME. Got caught with wife number 2 and a la Authentique.
2. Margie Romney Aslett was one of the designers/owners I believe, and this was after she broke out of the contract with Advantus and Girl Paperie. not sure why she left abruptly but I do remember her leaving a few months after joining the team.
9:56 all of scrapbook.com's YouTube videos are excellent. There are hundreds of them from CHA 2016 alone. An equally good Canadian company did another set of CHA videos, some with Nancy Nally, but I forgot their name. Will post it if it comes to mind.
If you're into mixed media, there are loads of great videos at joggles.com. they're a Rhode Island specialty store with very good prices and customer service.

Colors in scrapbook papers never look as saturated IRL as they do online and prices on them are increasing. Manufacturers should be taken to task about false advertising. With no LSS's in this region, I buy very few patterned papers now.
I agree about color saturation in paper. I purchased a paper pad a couple months back, and was very disappointed when I received the actual product. My teens are putting it to good use. When you scrap digitally, you can improve the saturation if you know what to do.
Improving color color saturation is very easy in digital scrapping, but most people aren't into that.
We want the papers advertised, not overpriced, faded stuff. Manufacturers are doing a bait and switch that saves them money on inks and increases their mark-up.
Manufacturers can get away with cheap, unsaturated inks and washed out colors because they canned all of their professional graphic designers and there's no more quality control. Staff designers and DT's have no authority over the printing process.
Does anyone use the special tips for dina wakley paint? I tried to use it to write on a page and I have to squeeze the tube so hard to get the paint to flow that I make a mess.
I love looking at kits, but I had to stop buying them because they usually include a lot of really cute/cool elements that wind up collecting dust in my craft room.
Why are the Tim Holtz/Sizzix "Village" dies so expensive? Has anyone been able to find them at a reasonable price? Or have suggestions for an alternative?
Hero Arts has some 3-D houses for $20.00 and Die-Versions has one for $32 (ouch). I saw these at the Frantic Stamper site. The Hero Arts ones are probably smaller but a good contractor (ha!) could manage something with two of them....Also, you might look at Sizzix site itself to see if it's selling a variation since they make them for Tim Holtz.
So any SU demos out there? What do you think of the limited, exclusive "Thoughtful Branches"? It's a great set BUT it's a pretty expensive chunk of money to spend just before the holiday catalog presale starts, especially for a limited promotion. I'm a hobbyist so I'm not looking at long term in the sense of how long can I demo it and get others to buy it. (That's why I'm looking at what I like in the Holiday catalog preview and looking to see if another company does something similar and the price point.) I will say that I have not seen a stamp and die set similar to the Thoughtful Branches but I'm still on the fence.
Wow, thanks for the heads up. That is a really nice stamp/die combo. It is expensive so I see why you're hesitating. I'd probably have to mull that purchase over too. I like it for a sympathy card. I'm going to keep that set in mind.
It's gorgeous but yes the price is a bit steep. SU dies and stamps are always top quality and worth the price though. I am looking forward to seeing what they have for the holidays!
I'm a demo and I got to see the new stuff on Thursday for our pre-orders. There are some really really nice things coming out. Some go with the new stamp sets/dies from the new annual catalog like the jars, the bears and the llama set for example. I have to really scale back what I'm ordering, but there are many things that are unique to SU.
Looks like the old blog is private now. Guess, if you are reading here, thanks for the space for all those years. I don't blame you for checking out once the crazy troll took over. I think 95% of the comments toward the end were from one toxic person.
I posted this and then it disappeared. Sorry if it double posts...
I ordered some of the Crate Paper Cute Girl, I am excited to get it. Unfortunately I am running into the same problem I had with their "Little You" collection, the online stores I usually go to don't have all the pieces so I may have to order them from a few different places to get the whole collection. I notice ACOT already sold out of almost all of it.
I agree that the online pictures of products are often brighter/more colorful than they are in person and I have been disappointed a few times when I got them. Unfortunately our last lss is gone now so I depend on ordering online.
I follow another scrapbook company that is family owned and though they show pictures of their kids I couldn't tell you any of their names and while you can tell they are family oriented they keep it on a professional level. Becky Higgins overshares info about herself then we get handslapped if we dare question what she does, you can't have it both ways.
On the Two Peas Refugees board, an LDS poster talked about how most scrappers are currently non-Mormon. Scrapbooking is I guess not popular in the Mormon community now. The poster suggested LDS women like Higgins and Heidi Swapp emphasize their families to present Mormon values in a positive light to the non LDS community. I took away from this that they see their businesses as missionary platforms. So you get a lot of personal talk, revealing of private life as a way to get people close into your values. But I also see this in another way. You have talented, extremely bright women stretching to exercise their talent in a community limiting them totally to caring for husband and children. So these creative women found ways to fulfill themselves in business by making their business their families. There's something hugely creative about this and hugely sad at the same time. While other women are out adventuring, finding ways to integrate their family lives with their careers, and finding fulfillment in both, these women are not able to express desires for achievement outside of their family relationships. In effect, they have no identity apart from them. Not that these successful LDS women are unhappy --just that they (and we) can never know all they might otherwise have achieved and contributed.
Thanks for the clean boards.

ReplyDeleteThanks. I'll check it out!
DeleteIt's slow here, but I hope it will pick up.
ReplyDeleteWhat new collections are catching your eye?
I am loving some of the Simple Stories (hello Fall), Photo Play - Fall and Christmas....not so much the retro Christmas from Authentique though.
DeleteHaven't spent much time looking at Photo Play, but they remind me of October Afternoon (speaking of the "Slightly Sassy" collection).
ReplyDeleteOne of the designers from October Afternoon is actually with Carta Bella now....Steven something or another.
DeletePhoto Play Paper is an offchute of Echo Park Paper. Jody was one of the owners, and left and formed with his brother in law Photo Play Paper.
Steven Duncan. Awesome illustrations and designs.
DeleteOh no. Just got stuck on the Scrapbook.com YT videos from the SPC show for all the new collections and products...
ReplyDeleteAlthough I would never buy the whole collection (not really my style), the Rosie Bell collection from Prima is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI just bought some of the Authentique "Fabulous" line.
ReplyDeleteWasn't there some scandal circulating around Authentique when they first went into business? What was it?
ReplyDeleteI think there are a couple of things if I remember correctly about Authentique.

Nancy also runs an industry news website all year long.
If you're hankering for the original Two Peas, loads of their videos are still on YouTube under Two Peas in a Bucket.
ReplyDeleteShimelle Laine also has her own YT channel which includes all of her Two Peas vids. The original Glitter Girl series is still her best work.

ReplyDeleteI really like the new preview of the Felicity Jane kit posted on instagram! Excited to get it!

DeleteThe Tim Holtz houses were on sale for 20% off at two of the recommended stores for a month. Shop around.
ReplyDeleteI really love the look of Echo Park's new Deck the Halls. It reminds me a lot of MME's Christmas at Market Street. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the new space without all the monkey nonsense
